Person
Name: Iessay
Gender: Female
Age: 19 turns
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Rank: Candidate
Family: Mother: Amira. Father: unknown.
Appearance: Iessay is thin, not willowy, or slim, but thin, just barely avoids being underweight. People have compared her to a tree, all brown and rough. It's not far from true. She's average in height and looks.
Her only real standout physical trait is her voice, a rich soprano that would make most Harpers turn almost green with envy. Her hair's a medium brown, tending to curl. She's tanned and her hands and feet are callused, roughened from hard work and conditions her whole life.
Personality: Iessay can speak sweetly, but she rarely means it when she puts on a friendly face or offers compliments. There are maybe a grand total of three people she thinks are worth giving a tinker's damn about, and of those, only two are still alive. She's capable of being charming, polite, funny; even seductive, with older men or women. But love? Friendship? Don't count on it. But she is a very good actress, and if you treat her nicely, she'll return the favor.
She is intelligent, and ambitious. Those aren't traits that got women treated well, where she's originally from, so she doesn't advertise them. She soaks up information like a sponge, and has no compunctions about making use of whatever she learns to improve her own circumstances.
What you see is usually whatever she wants you to see. The innocent little girl? The clever musician who loves the stage? The flirt? The devoted daughter, or student?
Beneath that, there's a vicious streak, and she's also not lacking in courage or temper. Insult or bother her, and that innocence may not be visible for long.
History: Iessay's mother grew up in Fallwynne Hold. She was, officially, a drudge at a tavern, but her real 'work' was entertaining the customers, men and sometimes women. And needless to say, we're not talking about singing or comedy routines here. Amira was beautiful, but not strong. She was too afraid of being alone, or of what her 'employers' would do to her if she tried to leave, to say no.
When she discovered she was pregnant, that was the final nail in the coffin. How could she go holdless with a baby to raise? Iessay was born, nine months later, and grew up in the little rooms behind the tavern.
Amira didn't really change her ways. Iessay grew up feeling little affection for the woman, and seeing how Amira latched onto any man who might have something to offer her, more than a small amount of contempt. She learned more about the sort of person she didn't want to be, watching Amira, than anything else. It didn't help that Iessay was more intelligent than most of her peers, and knew it. That just widened the gap between her and the people who were around her, while she was growing up. She decided that if she took up with any man, it would be when SHE wanted, and for her own benefit or pleasure. No one would *ever* treat her like a piece of property.
The Harpers taught her the basic lessons that all children were required to learn. She wanted more; always did. When she was twelve, and old enough to start being noticed by some of the 'customers' who wanted Amira to wait on them, she decided that she'd had enough. She went to the Harper Hall as an apprentice. It was the last time she saw the tavern,
though she and Amira sometimes exchange letters, and her mother has made(rare) visits to the Crafthall.
She didn't go alone; she had a green flit, named Jasi, a "gift" (stolen, actually, as an egg) from a customer who was foolish enough to pass out in the family's rooms after one too many drinks. Iessay hid the egg until it hatched, telling no one, until she'd Impressed the little green.
Away from greedy and heavy-handed adults, it was the happiest time Iessay had ever experienced. During the next four years, she learned rapidly. Music, history, laws, art. She loved it. Her mentor, a female Harper named Perrin, encouraged her in learning, and when the older woman saw how Iessay behaved toward people, helped her learn to relate to them without constant mistrust. She didn't judge the young Iessay, knowing her background, or look down on her. Iessay grew to love her teacher like an older sister. It was the closest she got to a real family, and she treasured the time.
When she was old enough to walk the tables, she went north as a journeyman. She sailed with a trading ship that went back and forth between North and South. The crew treated her with courtesy. She struck up a friendship with the captain, a kindhearted, lively man who became her first lover. They traded songs, and stories, while she was aboard. The experience of being treated with respect, rather than greed, by strangers was a new one to her. Sadly, while she didn't forget, the voyage was short-lived.
A sudden, violent storm wrecked the ship, near to the coast. Only a handful of people survived. Iessay's lover wasn't among them. Searchers from Ista's harbor and the nearby Weyr found the survivors, adrift in a small dinghy. They were brought to Ista Weyr to be treated for their injuries.
Iessay suffered a broken ankle, but no worse.
No one but Jasi ever saw her show grief, or cry...but nonetheless, her songs held sadness for some time afterward.
While at Ista, Iessay drew the attention of the dragons. Two of the blues who were noted Search dragons mentioned her to their riders. She was offered the opportunity to Stand at the next Istan Hatching. She did, but no dragon chose her. Then, she heard rumors of a new Weyr being founded in the Southern Continent.
She would have died before admitting that she missed home, but she did. She asked to be conveyed back to the Harper Hall in the South, and from there, began traveling again. Ostensibly, she was a journeyman bringing music to new places, but she was/is also searching for this alleged Weyr.
