After 700 Turns, Thread once again begins to fall on a Pern that no longer knows what to do with it, or even believes in its existence. Thanks to AIVAS, used almost a thousand years ago, the Red Star had been moved to a less dangerous path through space. Life on Pern flourished. All but the dragons, who dwindled down almost to nothing. But the reprieve, however long-lasting, was not meant to be…

In retrospect, such an impressive and out-of-schedule flight should have been a hint. Erisath was - is - up there in Turns. Flights were sporadic at best, once every two or three Turns and very quick, barely longer than the flight of a large green. When she clutched, there was rarely more than ten eggs, all tiny, and a bronze among them was considered spectacular. For her to Rise barely a Turn after her last clutch hatched was strange. Stranger still was how long it lasted, several hours, wearing down all but the youngest bronze at Telgar. And the clutch itself was inspirational, no less than forty eggs, with two solid gold shells among them. Two queens in one clutch, by far the most magnificent of any laid by Erisath.
I was at Healer Hall. Sixteen and unruly, the only thing that kept me from walking the tables was my lack of self-discipline; I was gifted with herbs, tonics and plants, perhaps one of the best herbalists seen at Healer Hall in many Turns. Certainly I received many compliments. My skill turned out to be extremely useful when the Red Star rose high in the sky. I recognized the silver high above far more quickly than most, and I was inside. Healer Hall suffered minimal casualties, and we were fortunate. The Dragonriders were hit the worst. Numbering all of three hundred to start with, after the Fall they were down to under one hundred dragons and only one queen, with her dazzling clutch on the Sands, attracting attention.
The Holds were irreparably damaged in the Fall. Like Telgar Weyr, the last of the Weyrs, their populations were decimated. Survivors were left tending to the wounded, and most of us at Healer Hall were sent to surrounding areas in their time of desperation. Fate intervened in my favor; I was sent to Telgar Weyr no less than a sevenday before Erisath’s clutch hatched. There were no where near enough able-bodied candidates to stand for such a large clutch. My arrival was heralded with the insistence that I Stand; if nothing else, as a prospective selection. I did not believe I would Impress, and did not much care. My heart lay in the healing arts. I agreed only because of desperate need. Had I realized my luck, or perhaps destiny, I would have been considerably more excited at the first tell-tale sounds of dragon humming.

I had been at Telgar less than a sevenday when it came. It was utterly silent, strangely beautiful, but deadlier than any knife. Being out in the Weyrbowl, I caught glimpses of Thread as it slipped almost gracefully through the sky, glinting silver in Rukbat’s midday rays. The glimpse was brief; everything erupted into chaos and I was whisked into the safety of the lower caverns as the wings prepared themselves. By the time it was over, roughly a fourth of the dragons that went out returned able to still take to the skies. The dragon population of Telgar was utterly devastated. It inspired awe of the most horrible, gut-wrenching kind to walk through the ‘Bowl and see scores of dragons laid low, moaning in agony with their riders either trying to sooth them or simply trying, mostly in vain, to hide their own pain from their mindmates.
Being that I knew the rudiments of healing, I helped where I could. Many of the patients were beyond my meager skills… indeed, many of them were beyond the skills of even the Master Dragonhealer. The despair was crippling; even with such a magnificent clutch on the Sands, it seemed that the Weyr was doomed, and all of Pern with it. It had to have been one of the darkest hours in Pern’s history.
All hope rode on the clutch that hardened on Telgar’s Sands. When the day came, the crowd went away from the Hatching shocked: not one, but two strange dragons had hatched out of what had been believed to be two golden queen eggs; a queen who was colorless, a sparkling silver hue, and a male that was blacker than the darkest ebony wood and as brooding as storm clouds. The surprises from these two kept Pern on its toes for Turns to come. Six Turns after their Hatching, however, the strained relationship between the offspring of the strange pair and the traditional dragons broke. The ‘Jewels’ as they were dubbed, were banished from Telgar and sent away.
What has become of these Jewels? How are they faring in their new Southern home…?
All shall be revealed...
